But Dr. Debra Davidson, the keynote speaker at this year\u2019s graduate student-organized EARThS (Environment, Agriculture, Resources, Technology, Society) conference, is hoping to inform that discussion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the fact that there\u2019s a potential relationship between urban agriculture, climate change, food security, and urban stewardship and sustainability, it seems like we ought to pay more attention to it,\u201d said Davidson, a professor at the University of Alberta.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212\" style=\"width: 445px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3221\/2015\/07\/IMG_2574.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-212\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3221\/2015\/07\/IMG_2574.jpg\" alt=\"Darcy Hauslik, Katie Bittinger, and Raoul Lievanos\" width=\"445\" height=\"243\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-212\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graduate student EARThS organizers Darcy Hauslik and Katie Bittinger and EARThS faculty advisor Raoul L\u00edevanos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Davidson is seeking to collaborate with a variety of experts and scholars from different disciplines to study urban agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in socio-ecological systems, so if we want to understand what the relevance of urban agriculture is, then we want to know why people participate, but we also need to understand what the impact of those practices are on soil and water,\u201d Davidson said. \u201cWe absolutely have to have that connection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davidson\u2019s keynote address illustrated the larger interdisciplinary theme of the EARThS conference: \u201cThe Anthropocene: Confronting Global Environmental Change and Hazardous Worlds.\u201d The conference, organized by WSU sociology graduate students, brought together a program of presenters from a variety of academic fields, such as crop and soil sciences, biology, chemistry, environmental science, and design and construction.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_214\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-214\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3221\/2015\/07\/IMG_2616.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-214\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3221\/2015\/07\/IMG_2616.jpg\" alt=\"Charles O'Nwamba\" width=\"276\" height=\"147\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charles O&#8217;Nwamba, a graduate student in chemistry at University of Idaho.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Davidson stressed the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese discussions are extremely important because they allow for a growing awareness of the extent to which we are asking very similar research questions and that we do recognize that our research is motivated by similar sets of problems that we are trying to address,\u201d Davidson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the natural scientists I speak with, they get it. They say over and over again, \u2018Help us figure this out. We understand that these environmental problems are social problems that require social solutions.&#8217; [There are] relatively less light bulbs going off in the social sciences, generally speaking. There\u2019s less of an impetus to reach out to cross those disciplinary boundaries. That\u2019s a big gap.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_215\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-215\" style=\"width: 343px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3221\/2015\/07\/IMG_2586.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-215\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3221\/2015\/07\/IMG_2586.jpg\" alt=\"Travis Seaborn\" width=\"343\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-215\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Travis Seaborn, a WSU graduate student in biological sciences.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The EARThS conference attempted to fill that gap, by featuring presentations on social determinants of environmental risk and biological solutions to environmental problems.
