{"id":635,"date":"2017-03-01T14:50:37","date_gmt":"2017-03-01T22:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soc.wsu.edu\/socnews\/?page_id=635"},"modified":"2017-03-06T16:50:38","modified_gmt":"2017-03-07T00:50:38","slug":"department-accomplishments-in-2016","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/soc.wsu.edu\/socnews\/department-accomplishments-in-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Department Achievements and Publications"},"content":{"rendered":"<br \/>\n<section id=\"builder-section-1486318869670\" class=\"row single gutter pad-top\">\n<div style=\"\" class=\"column one \">\n<header>\n<h2>Department Achievements and Publications<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Below are recent achievements by graduate students and faculty in the Sociology Department, including awards, appointments, and publications (* denotes a current or former graduate student).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Accomplishments and Appointments<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hong Zhang*<\/strong> received her Sociology PhD in December 2016 and is now employed as an Associate\u00a0Research Fellow at the Institute of National\u00a0Governance, Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangdon Sheng, China.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jarred Williams*<\/strong> accepted a position as a full-time Research Associate at the University of Michigan Law School, and is living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, while finishing his PhD dissertation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jon Schreiner* <\/strong>began work in January 2017 on the American Community Survey (ACS) Methods Panel Coordination Branch of the U.S. Bureau of the Census in Suitland, Maryland, while finishing his PhD dissertation.<\/p>\n<p>Masters of Arts in Sociology degrees were awarded in 2016 to <strong>Lindsey Beltz*, Liz Dzialo*, Jon Dahlem*, Alana Inlow*, James McCall* and Adam Roth*<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Julie Kmec<\/strong> was appointed Editor in Chief, <em>Sociology Compass, 2017.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Julie Kmec <\/strong><strong>received a grant from the National Science Foundation: <\/strong>NSF HRD Award #1561430. \u201cCOLLABORATIVE<strong>:<\/strong> Women&#8217;s Engineering Participation in the US: What can the US Learn from Women&#8217;s Decisions to Pursue Engineering in Diverse Cultural Contexts?\u201d ($589,200) Principal investigators Dr. Julie Kmec and Dr. Jennifer DeBoer (Purdue University), co-PIs: Dr. Ashley Ater-Kranov, Dr. Nehal Abu-Lail (WSU-Engineering), Dr. Karen Bradley (Western Washington University-Sociology) (09\/2016-2018)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Julie Kmec <\/strong>was also awarded the prestigious Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award for Instruction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lisa J. McIntyre <\/strong>received the 2016 Graduate School Mentor Academy Award for Excellence In recognition of outstanding leadership and contributions to Graduate Education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clay Mosher<\/strong> is on a sabbatical during the current academic year, working on a marijuana policy book, \u201cThe Changing Landscape of Marijuana \u2013 Normalization, Demonization, and Legalization,\u201d to be published by Temple University Press.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clay Mosher<\/strong> has received a $30,000 grant for \u201cEvaluation of Clark County Juvenile Recovery Court&#8221; &#8211; from Clark County, Wash., and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. In addition M<strong>osher <\/strong>and<strong> Jennifer Schwartz <\/strong>have received a $110,000 grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice Racial and Ethnic Disparities Initiative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>James F. Short, Jr. <\/strong>has been invited to write the introductory chapter for the newly established <em>Annual Review of Criminology<\/em>. The editors for the inaugural issue are Robert Sampson, who received our department&#8217;s William Julius Wilson Award in 2013, and Joan Petersilla.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amy S. Wharton<\/strong> completed the 2016 Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) Bryn Mawr Summer Institute, July 11-23, 2016. Wharton joined 63 women leaders across the United States as part of the HERS Institute at Bryn Mawr College.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bekah Torcasso* <\/strong>is now serving on the Board of Directors of Witness for Peace Southeast a non-profit organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gina Castillo*<\/strong>\u00a0 received a Graduate Fellowship from the Ford Family Foundation that provides support for her sociology graduate work at WSU.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Lengefeld* and Pierce Greenberg* <\/strong>each received Arnold and Julia Greenwell Memorial Scholarship Awards from the WSU Graduate School.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sarah Morton <\/strong>received the Charles Allen Master&#8217;s Thesis Award from the WSU Graduate School.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don A. Dillman received <\/strong>lifetime designation as a National Associate of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in recognition of his service to the National Research Council and institute of Medicine programs. He also received the Paul F.
