Welcome to the October 2017 Issue\u00a0of Sociology New<\/em>s<\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Wilson-Short<\/a>Fall is here\u2014and WSU Sociology has seen some exciting changes. We begin this issue with a letter from new department chair Monica Kirkpatrick Johnson<\/a>. She shares her goals for the department, including implementation of a new strategic plan.<\/p>\n

We also highlight the appointment of Justin Denney as William Julius Wilson Distinguished Professor<\/a>, a new rural poverty book co-edited by Jennifer\u00a0Sherman<\/a>, and the team of WSU Sociology PhDs who received an Innovation Award <\/a>from the American Association for Public Opinion Research in May.<\/p>\n

This issue also includes a new feature “In Brief<\/a>,” where we highlight several noteworthy happenings: including pictures from last year’s banquet and the graduate student-organized EARThS conference. We close the issue with summer achievements and\u00a0alumni updates from Chris Oakely and Larry Clinton.<\/p>\n

In the next issue of Sociology News<\/em>, we plan to focus on our undergraduate students and alumni.
