\n<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\nDr. Julie Kmec’s undergraduate research methods class (SOC 317) presented posters on a variety of topics in the atrium of the Smith Center for Undergraduate Education during the fall semester. <\/a><\/p>\nDr. Christine Oakley, a WSU Sociology alumna, was recognized as a WSU Woman of Distinction. Oakley is currently the Director for Global Learning in the WSU Office of International Programs and also holds an appointment as a Clinical Associate Professor in Sociology. She served as the principal advisor for sociology undergraduates for several years.<\/p>\n
She was acknowledged for her outstanding work in helping WSU students engage globally. For example, she has traveled with students to India to compete in the Global Case Competition.<\/p>\n
In addition to her academic work, Oakley was also recognized for her service to the community\u2014by volunteering with the Whitman County Dental Health Coalition, the Palouse Alliance for Health Individuals, Families, and Communities, and other local organizations.<\/p>\n
Oakley will be recognized during the Women’s Recognition Symposium on April 9.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\nNew colloquium presentations draw bi-weekly crowds<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\nThis fall marked the establishment of the Department of Sociology’s bi-weekly colloquium, which has featured research presentations from WSU graduate students, faculty, and other guest speakers.<\/p>\n
Graduate student speakers for the fall and spring included Eric Allen, Lindsey Beltz, Marisa Cervantes, Xiao Li, James McCall (pictured below), Sarah Morton, and Lauren Scott.<\/p>\n
Associate professor Jennifer Sherman, affiliated faculty and Social and Economic Sciences Research Center director Lena Le, Carson College of Business assistant professor Leah Sheppard, and University of Minnesota demographer and sociology professor Jack DeWaard also presented in the colloquium.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3221\/2018\/03\/IMG_6626.jpg\")
