Support Student Internships

You can help us provide for our Sociology Graduate Students with our new Graduate Internship course we are developing. Graduating PhD’s in sociology are increasingly finding employment outside of academia. Of sociology PhDs conferred at WSU between 2010-2015 first job placement was in academia 78% of the time. From 2016-22 the percentage of newly conferred PhD students landing jobs in academia was cut nearly in half (40%).

Internships outside of academia are an important experience that significantly enhances students’ ability to land jobs beyond academia. The course we are introducing will facilitate these experiences for our students, and we are working with partners in state agencies, non-profits and business organizations to build-up internship opportunities.

The first of many internship opportunities to come, we are starting with the Washington Court Research Student Engagement Program. The program aspires to help students grow their skill set relating to applied justice and legal system research leadership in policy development, and create meaningful connections with state- and community-level decision makers.
