Apply for a Graduate Degree

Each year, six to ten new students are admitted to the Department of Sociology graduate program. Preference is given to applicants who intend to complete the PhD degree.

Applications are processed by the Graduate School at Washington State University.

The department also requires three letters of recommendation, a writing sample, and a brief statement of your professional interests, all of which are to be submitted directly to the Graduate School. The department does not use GRE scores in evaluating applications. Those students submitting all of the materials required for admission to the graduate program will automatically be considered for financial support, usually in the form of a graduate teaching or research assistant stipend.

Applicants may send specific questions about the application to soc@wsu.edu. Feel free to reach out to the our director of graduate studies, Erik Johnson.

Questions relating to what it is like to be a graduate student in the Department of Sociology at WSU can be directed to the current student representatives of graduate studies, Sam Castonguay, Caleb Cooley, or any member of our faculty specializing in research topics in which you may have an interest.

The annual application deadline is January 10 for the following fall semester.
